DESPITE their lack of boats after an accident on the motorway at the end of the summer, and mainly thanks to the generosity of Worcester Rowing Club in lending boats and equipment Upton Rowing club entered seven crews in the Worcester Small Boats Head recently.

There were no outright winners, but despite the conditions, particularly in the morning division when battle was done against a strong head wind, there were some good times noted.

It was good to see a young crew competing for Upton Rowing Club, this is only the second young crew in the Club's recent history. They were taught to row and brought on during the summer by Pat Cox and will doubtless be entering many events over the coming winter. The crew comprises Richard Cope, Edward Cope, Richard Scott, Neil Cleaver and is coxed by Pat Cox.

Having thus started the Heads Season, the following Saturday, October 13, Upton Rowing Club held its annual end of season dinner in the Memorial Hall.

An excellent meal was followed by much laughter at the excellent speeches made by Hamish Barkley and Clive Killick. After the speeches reviewing the rather difficult season, firstly due to floods, then foot and mouth disease, the following awards were presented by Gabby Tolkein, in the absence of Club President, Lady Coventry:

Secretary's Cup (Cox of the Year) - Karen Lannni; Committee Cup (Best off-water contribution) - John Dean; Chairman's Cup (Best men's crew) - Jeff Radnor, Keith Shouler, Richard Lee, Christopher Couper, Cox - Sheena Robinson; President's Cup (Best women's crew) - Pat Cox, Deirdre Thompson, Annie Surman, Freya Biggs, Cox - Debbie Thompson; Captain's Cup (Best individual contribution to rowing) - Steve Cox for his efforts with the juniors.
