Pershore's James Calado rounded off a fantastic season by finishing second in the Super One National Kart Championship at Buckmore Park, Kent.

Having won the Cadet class of the Champions of the Future series a month earlier, and with it, the prestigious MSA British Cadet Championship, Calado was aiming to make a clean sweep of the awards at the season finale.

But trailing 13 points behind Daniel Rowbottom at the start of the day, the Ford Racing Young Gun knew his fate was not entirely in his own hands.

Calado did everything in his power to claw back the deficit, finishing fifth, fourth and first in his three heats, from grid positions of 10th, last and second.

But Rowbottom steadily picked up points throughout the day, and despite Calado beating him by three places in the day's A' final, the gap was too great.

With the MSA British Cadet crown already won, and the driver itching to step up to Junior Yamaha level next season, Calado was not too disappointed.

He said: "It would have been great to win both championships but it wasn't to be.

"I've enjoyed my last Cadet race, but now can't wait to get out testing in the Yamaha. I think my driving style should be well suited to the extra power and I aim to be on the pace very quickly."

n Little Witley's Steve Watton just failed in his bid for overall championship honours at Silver-stone despite a valiant effort.

He had to finish first or second with his nearest rival failing to finish, to add the overall crown to the class title, which he sealed recently at Donington Park.

Watton started from pole position out of a field of 30 cars for the last round of the Historic Sports Car Clubs Historic Roadsports Championship.

Watton sprinted into an early lead, but at the end of the lap Andrew Marler in a similar Lotus Elan outbraked him into Brooklands corner.

Watton fought back instantly, trying to go round the outside at Luffield. Marler ran wide which left Watton nowhere to go and kept the car on the track despite a lurid sequence of slides, but slipped to fifth place.

He caught back one place instantly and then two laps later outbraked Barry Ashdown's Lotus Elan into Brooklands, but could only finish third behind Marler and the Chevrolet Camaro of Chris Pring.

He then discovered his rival had finished anyway and had secured the title.

Watton has enjoyed a competitive season winning four of the nine races outright and coming second in another three, but the complexities of the points system defeated him and he finished third overall.

He is changing his trusty Elan for a 1965 TVR Griffith for his next assault on the championship, which should begin next April at Donington Park.
