KING'S School, Worcester, produced a scintillating display of attacking rugby as they overwhelmed Worcester Sixth Form College 53-17 in the third round of the Daily Mail Cup at Sixways.
Full-back Peter Winstanley scored a hat-trick of tries including an outstanding individual effort to settle King's nerves after the Sixth Form College had applied early pressure. Half-backs Ross Laidlaw and Nick Major were in fine form with Major making num-erous clean breaks while Laidlaw's astute reading of the game was a key factor in King's victory.
Luke Narraway, an injury doubt in the build up to the game, was the star of the King's forwards but every member of the team played their part in what was a highly impressive performance, against a powerful College side.
Playing with a strong wind at their backs in the first half King's did well to withstand a barnstorming start from their opponents, but once the game settled down the superior pace and handling of the King's back-line proved decisive.
First half tries from Winstanley, Narraway and Richard Hallett, all converted by Laidlaw, who also added two penalties, gave King's a comfortable half-time lead.
The College's hopes had been raised by a converted try just before half-time following a defensive lapse by King's when poor communication saw two players colliding leaving James Richardson with a simple touchdown.
As a contest the game ended shortly after half time when fine handling by King's resulted in tries for Tom Muir and Winstanley.
The College did not lose heart and fought back with tries by Richardson and Nick Highley resulting from strong driving forward play, but a fine individual effort by Major and Winstanley's third, following a good break by Simon Potter, ended the scoring.
