BUILDERS working on Worcester's new multi-million pound hospital will be undergoing checks of a different kind during an initiative to mark European Health and Safety week.
Busy workers are being encouraged to take advantage of exclusive health checks thanks to a partnership between the county's heath authority and the Chamber of Commerce Herefordshire and Worcestershire.
Up to 280 workmen will be downing tools but keeping their shirtsleeves rolled up as health professionals carry out checks on their skin condition and blood pressure.
The initiative, which also includes "healthy option" food at the hospital's canteen, was the brainchild of Gary Higgerson, regional safety manager for Bovis Lend Lease, which is building the hospital.
Meryl Johnson, health promotion co-ordinator, said because many of the workers worked away from home, it reduced the opportunity for them to visit their own doctor.
We hope this is an offer they cannot refuse," she said.
It's a genuine chance for these men to get checked out and discuss any issues such as skin concerns they may have from working outside.
Christopher Harvey, head of representation and membership at the Chamber of Commerce, said good health made sense both for the individual and business.
A healthy workforce reduces absenteeism and improves productivity and competitiveness for business, he said.
We hope this scheme will encourage other firms to take health seriously and see it is something which can improve their bottom line.
