IT does no good to adopt an abusive tone over the issue of the A441 roundabout. This is no better than road rage on paper.

There are no 'idiots' in this situation, only uninformed and confused drivers.

The actual layout of the roundabout is such that the Rough Hill Drive exit is nearer to three-quarters of the roundabout than it is to straight over.

Let's not consider what the situation might or might not have been were there no roundabout, as in previous letters. There is a roundabout and it is best to refer to the Highway Code for an answer.

The code states clearly the left lane of the two lane approach is to be used for the left exit. For straight ahead (whether one considers the Oakenshaw exit or the A441 exit to satisfy this definition) you may approach in the left lane or if, a two lane approach, the righthand lane. When turning right, use the righthand lane.

As is apparent, this still leaves the driver to judge which of the two lanes to use if he wishes to exit onto Rough Hill Drive. It will largely depend on whether such a driver considers the manoeuvre to be 'straight over' or 'turning right.' I prefer to see it as the latter.

The code assumes drivers will be sensible and considerate. Unfortunately, some drivers in Redditch are willing to use their vehicles to prove a personal point and this letters page to offer unwarranted abuse.
