THE giant 24ft high lock gates at Stourport Basins were replaced on Monday, hoisted out by a 50-tonne crane.
The new gates were built in Birmingham by British Waterways' own construction team using the same methods as were used more than 100 years ago. The massive 24 ft high lock gates being replaced at Stourport Basins.
"Of course they use power tools now - I'd hate to have been the one who had to rub those things down with sandpaper," said British Waterways' Midlands communications manager Claire Bampton.
The 25-year-old gates were being replaced after coming to the end of their working life and British Waterways used the opportunity to check the drained locks for any repairs that may be needed on the walls and basin bottom.
"It took about an hour-and-a-half to change the gates but the whole job took all day," said Ms Bampton.
However, the locks are now filled with water and open to the public again, she added.
