The son of former England goalkeeping legend Peter spent the past two seasons at Hartlepool before his free transfer move to Third Division opposition Harriers.
An attacking midfielder who also filled in at wing-back, he moved from Plymouth Argyle to Coventry as a teenager for £125,000.
With seven Premiership appearances under his belt, the Nottingham-born left-footer was released and ended up in the north-east.
One of Harriers' main corner takers, Shilton, who is capable of beating his man and getting in a good cross, has given them balance and started the season as a regular.
