WHAT a surprise! The piano building may have to be demolished after all. Anyone who has followed the town centre redevelopment saga from the beginning and is aware of the list of buildings the original planning brief wanted saved cannot fail but come to the conclusion that our utterly altruistic redevelopers have always wanted a clear site to work from.
It is a safe bet that if Slingfield Mill had not been listed they would have flattened that as well. After all it costs more and involves the use of imagination to refurbish existing buildings for alternative uses.
With a clear site they can throw up some cheap steel frames with some brick cladding and a few token twiddley bits to produce a Victoridustrial pastiche of the original architecture.
How on earth did a company that must have made it clear from the start that it wanted to ride roughshod over the original planning brief ever get invited to do the job in the first place?
