WITH the clocks going back this weekend, police are advising people to think carefully about their safety and the security of their property.
"Dusk will start at about 4pm from next week, a time at which many people will still be at work, which could result in their homes and vehicles being left vulnerable," said a West Mercia police spokesman.
"Simple security measures can be easily put into place, many of which don't cost too much money.
"Properties that have overgrown bushes near to either the entrance or the back of the house are attractive to burglars as they can hide in them. Make sure these bushes are pruned so that your property is clearly visible.
"Security lights are a good investment, particularly with the darker nights approaching, as they act as a deterrent to burglars.
"It is also worthwhile to fit a timer switch to a lamp in the house in order for your home to look occupied even if it isn't.
"Many people have good sound locks fitted to their homes and door chains but do not use them. We would advise everybody, but particularly the elderly, to make sure they know the identity of the person they let into their home.
"Use the door chain first and if in doubt, keep them out."
The spokesman also urged people to keep Christmas gifts out of sight and keep money and credit cards safe while out shopping.
