A GREEN-fingered woman has proved she is in blooming good form by celebrating her 100th birthday today.
Kate Ford, who worked for her family's florist business in Worcester, has one surviving sister, Elsie who is aged 98 and lives in Surrey.
Miss Ford first moved to Worcestershire when her family started their own florist business in Lowesmoor.
"Her niece Betty Herron deserves particular mention for the unfailing care and attention she's given Kate all through her life," said John Richardson, Miss Ford's nephew.
Miss Ford was born in Cumbria, on October 30, 1901, the second of five children.
"The family had a busy florists store in Lowesmoor and they also kept a stall in the central market for over 25 years," said Mr Richardson, who lives in Godalming, Surrey. "They were awarded the Gold Medal for rock plants at the Three Counties Show one year."
When she left school, Miss Ford started to learn shorthand and typing and began working at Kay's Store in Worcester.
"She decided to return to helping in her parents' shop where she became very proficient in making many types of bouquets and wreaths, and worked there for many years," added Mr Richardson.
When her parents retired, Miss Ford worked for a time at the Cadena Caf in the centre of Worcester and when they became infirm she stayed at home to look after them.
Miss Ford was due to be joined today by residents and friends for a tea party at The Lawns Nursing Home, Kempsey, where she now lives.
