TRAINSPOTTING antiques collectors from across the country are set to bid on a rare item of Worcester railwayana today.

A used Worcester train ticket is set to fetch up to £300 when it goes under the hammer at Philips Auction rooms in Knowle, Warwickshire.

The Victorian ticket was issued by the now defunct Oxford Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway.

The ticket is a blue parliamentary single way ticket to Kidderminster, and is just one of hundreds of items on offer at the sale.

Philip's railwayana expert Mark Hannam said that the twice-annual sales attract people from far and wide with a passion for steam engine days.

Many items from railway's pre-Dr Beeching era capture the imagination of many a nostalgic traveller.

"There is a very large market for this kind of thing," he said.

"It's a bit like trainspotting in history. It is an area of collectibility that has a wide following, and we sometimes see tickets go for hundreds and hundreds of pounds.

"There are very different levels of collectibility, from the man who buys a whole steam engine to the man who collects GWR benches,''
