FOR many years, the Redditch Disabled Access Group has been trying to persuade the Worcestershire Acute NHS Trust of the need for disabled parking spaces close to the Accident and Emergency Unit entrance and the main entrance to the Alexandra Hospital.

Disabled patients arriving at the hospital by car are finding that often the allocated parking for disabled vehicles is fully occupied and they are being directed to the peripheries of the car parks to park.

Patients with limited mobility find that in some cases, the distance between the entrance to the hospital and the available parking space is too great for them to negotiate on foot and they have no choice but to miss their appointment and return home.

The hospital has come up with a partial solution to the problem of access for limited mobility visitors to the hospital.

Persons visiting the hospital who have mobility problems and need assistance to get into the hospital can ring the hospital stating that assistance is required and requesting that a porter with a wheelchair is available to meet them at a specified time to enable transfer from car to hospital departments.
