Woodrush 11 Kings Norton 14
Kings Norton claimed two vital points from their Midlands Four West (South) relegation clash with neighbours Woodrush.
But it was a close-run thing with the visitors winning 14-11 at the end of a scrappy display that saw both sides missing penalties.
Woodrush took the lead after ten minutes when Stuart Pearson kicked a difficult penalty. But this proved the turning point as Kings went on to dominate the remainder of the half.
The pressure finally told late in the half when Simon Eldred scored his first try of the season, crashing in at the corner after play had been spread across the field. Eldred also kicked the conversion.
The visitors should have opened their tally prior to Eldred's score. A fine move resulted in John Hefford strolling over the line only to drop the ball.
Moments later, prop Kevin Edwards also crashed over the line but this 'try' was disallowed with the referee deciding that the ball had been held up.
Second row Phil Fergus also looked likely to score on his debut only to have play called back for an earlier infringement.
But rather than build on Eldred's try, Norton found their lead reduced by the break when Pearson kicked his second penalty to make the half-time score 7-6.
A wayward Woodrush penalty, after the home side had been in control, prompted Norton to launch an attack through scrum-half Martin Hefford. He ran the length of the pitch before unselfishly passing on to Peter May to score. Eldred kicked the conversion.
Nigel Simons chased through to collect a long kick to score a try for Woodrush in the closing minutes but it went unconverted to leave the score 14-11.
