THIS month sees the start of a new adaptation of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass at Stratford's Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

The Royal Shakespeare Company's new family show is a major staging of the timeless children's stories by Lewis Carroll.

Published in 1865 and 1872, both books were originally told as stories to 10-year-old Alice Liddell, who was the inspiration for the Alice in the titles.

Alice is played by Katherine Heath, in her first professional theatre role since leaving drama school, and all the other favourites such as the White Rabbit, Mock Turtle, Queen of Hearts and Cheshire Cat are also featured.

The show is directed by Rachel Kavanaugh, who makes her main-stage debut with the RSC after beginning her career at the Orange Tree Theatre and later becoming an RSC assistant director.

The story was adapted by Adrian Mitchell, the resident writer at the Unicorn's Theatre for Children, who has written stories, poetry and plays specifically for children, including dramatisations of work by Hans Christian Andersen and Beatrix Potter.

Alice in Wonderland runs from Friday, November 30, until March 9.

Tickets are available from 01789 403403.
