A SPORTING man from Alcester who dedicated many years of his life helping charitable organisations has died.
Albert Halsey, 76, passed away peacefully at his home in the town after he had been ill for some time.
During his life, he helped found and support a number of organisations which helped people of all ages.
His long career included serving in the Household Cavalry and in the 1950s, Mr Halsey was the Amateur Boxing Association (ABA) Heavyweight Champion of Great Britain.
As deputy headmaster of Bishop Challoner RC School in Birmingham, he organised annual boxing shows within schools as a fund-raising exercise.
These events were held in aid of the Cheshire Homes and particularly the Saltways Cheshire Home in Redditch, of which he was one of the founding fathers.
The boxing events went back to the days of the former St Michael RC School, where Mr Halsey had been deputy head and boxing coach.
These activities helped to encourage the formation of the Birmingham Schools Amateur Boxing Association.
