Droitwich RFC 23
Coventry Welsh 17
Midlands Four West (South)
DROITWICH grabbed their third successive league victory on Saturday, but were made to work hard for it by a strong Coventry Welsh side.
The opening quarter was evenly matched, with Coventry's strong forwards denying Droitwich quality possession for their dangerous backs.
Fly-half Simon Mountjoy began to take control of the game and ask questions of the visitors.
Sascha Hobbs made a good break to feed Nick King who did well to beat two men to score.
Shortly afterwards Rob McClean came off his wing to free Jamie Faulkener, who made a strong run before passing inside to Ben Cottrell, who rounded off an excellent move to score.
Just before half time Mountjoy made another fine break to ship the ball to King who scored his second.
Spa now seemed to have the game under control, despite Coventry's massive advantage in the forwards.
Again it was Mountjoy who supplied the flair for the fourth try, putting in a clever chip for Faulkener to gather and score.
The Welsh had other ideas, however, and hit back with a penalty and push over try. Another Welsh try made the last ten minutes nail biting, but a well struck drop goal by Mountjoy sealed the victory.
Droitwich will be pleased with the win, but have Simon Mountjoy to thank for his tireless work and initiative.
