DROITWICH boxer Michael Pardoe gave his all in the Midlands Finals of the National Association of Clubs for Young People Boxing Championships at Peterborough.

But the talented 15-year-old missed out by just two points on the computer scoring to England youth international Matthew Jones (Atherstone).

Stocky Pardoe, looking tiny beside his tall opponent, never allowed Jones to settle and use his reach advantage.

Pressing forward, Pardoe seemed to have the advantage in the many exchanges at close quarters and Jones looked distinctly uncomfortable.

Jones, a renowned puncher, was unable to land any telling blows, though he came more into it as Pardoe tired towards the end.

Many at ringside were convinced Pardoe had done enough to win, but computer scoring does not favour the boxer who works best at close quarters, who throws clusters of punches, or who lands body shots. Pardoe missed out in all these respects.

"It was a magnificent performance," said Droitwich coach Chris Andrews.

"Jones is highly regarded as an up-and-coming prospect, and Michael showed he is on a par.

"I know that the Midlands coach at ringside was impressed, and this defeat will do Michael's own chances of international recognition no harm.

"It is a shame that his style does not suit the computer, but with more experience and even higher levels of fitness he will overcome this disadvantage."

Andrews is hoping to slim some weight off Pardoe and build up his fitness for the schools championships, which start in January.

Pardoe will be boxing in a lower year group to Jones and looks set to be a formidable contender.
