POLICE officers working in Hereford have new weapons to help combat crime - mobile phones.
The city centre beat managers have been given four mobile phones by the Retail Association, improving communication in a bid to reduce shop crime.
The Retail Association consists of representatives from stores in the city centre with access to the radio network.
The network provides a link between stores and the beat managers policing the area.
The use of mobile phones, supplied by Tesco's, provides an alternative to the retail radio network. This method has already proved successful in catching shoplifters.
"Around seven arrests have already been made in the city centre by police officers using mobile phones and, with four additional phones, I'm confident that this number will increase," said Sgt Tim Powell.
"We're very grateful to the Retail Association for their kind donation, which I believe is an excellent example of the local community working with police to reduce crime."
