WORCESTER MP Mike Foster was today due to launch a new project to help victims of mental illness.
The Acolyte scheme, launched in conjunction with Worcestershire Community and Mental Health Trust, is based at the Shrub Hill Workshop, and will help those who have experienced mental ill health to regain confidence and skills.
"I've been involved with several examples of good work at the workshop, and business and office administration work is a great way to rehabilitate," said the MP.
"I'm sure it will help people enter the world of work and I'm delighted to play my small part in making this happen for the people of Worcester."
People joining Acolyte will be taught office skills, becoming involved in a variety of tasks, varying from collation of material to typing mail-shots, creating posters and producing presentations.
The work will be undertaken for health and community organisations, as well as small businesses.
It aims to give people new skills, that could act as a stepping stone to getting back into work.
Statistics show one in eight people with a history of mental ill health are in work, compared to one in three people with other disabilities.
"Those working in Acolyte will have the opportunity to gain office skills and experience," said Peter Jordan, team leader at Shrub Hill Workshop.
"For some, Acolyte will be a useful stepping stone in getting back to employment.
"The work will provide a valuable service to health and community organisations, and small-scale projects for businesses."
