THIS was a hugely positive result for Upton who displayed grit, determination and flair.

From the kick-off the home side played to their strengths - superb scrummaging from the front five, a mobile back row and back line with pace.

UPTON 2nd's 6pts, REDDITCH 2nd's 3 pts

Upton captain Dai Hodges proved a fine leader, motivating his team and leading by example. Worried recently about his general fitness the 36-year-old scrum half was keen to give credit where it was due.

"This was very much a team effort," he said. "Admittedly, over recent weeks I have been worried about my overall fitness levels but the the lads kept me going right to the end with their will to win against arch rivals Redditch. It was a fine display."

The pack tested Redditch at every opportunity, from opportunistic runs up the blind side to dominating in the scrum. It was two against the head for hooker Mark Symington who also proved to be that 'extra' back row player.

"It was a fine display from the pack," added Hodges. "I had good ball to feed our backs, helping us to attack at every opportunity. Rich Williams particularly, at fly-half proved to be an asset to the side."

Though a game without tries, two converted penalties by Ray Gidley saw Upton maintain an unbeaten record of home wins this season. "Bring on Birmingham Wyvern next week, we're on a roll," said Hodges.
