PLEASE may we have our Swanpool back? I see with pleasure that the process of repaving South Quay is well underway.
The jubilee celebrations will be much enhanced by a cooling in the fine fountains that are about to rise from the lovely stone pavings. This is a long-awaited enhancement of our city.
There is, however, one aspect of the project that puzzles me. In recent planning proposals/inquiries we have heard much of the undesirability of building in the flood plain.
The new paving raised the ground level on South Quay by 200 to 300 millimetres, (eight inches to a foot in old money) across the entire site.
This is the equivalent of a huge new building in the flood plain. Where, I wonder, is the hole being dug to compensate?
The usual understanding is that St John's gets anything that the city doesn't want, so what about a nice new pond? I could suggest several sites.
