I GREW up watching sleazy movies about New York - films such Midnight Cowboy and Taxi Driver.
But being from the running fraternity, the spirit and inspiration of Fred Lebo (father of the New York Marathon) and Mayor Giuliani's policy of zero tolerance gave me the confidence to experience the New York Marathon.
On this year's race day, runners from countries all over the world, from all colours and all religions will line up in a sea of humanity in sporting competition. This is not against one another but against themselves, striving to be the best they can.
The people who come and support us on Sunday will be backing just one team of 30,000 (this is why we run). Mr Lennon's Imagine will become a reality for just a few hours in its spiritual home, New York City.
PETER MOUNTFORD, Worcester.
