A SCHOOL in Worcester has received FA charter status thanks to its sporting initiatives.

Upton Snodsbury C E first school was given the national accolade from Sport England because of its sporting investment to benefit pupils' health.

The school was one of only 107 around the country to be commended for its schemes, which include football, tag rugby, athletics, dance and swimming.

Parents and teachers have both being involved in running after-school clubs, while Lottery funding has provided a trained coach for basketball. They are currently arranging games and football schemes for next summer holidays.

"The range of sports on offer is great for improving the self-esteem of the children," said headteacher Chris Complin.

"Once we introduce pupils to activities in school time it encourages them to move into club and team events outside of the classroom."

Only four schools in Worcestershire achieved the Activemark award.
