THE prospect of playing live on Match Of The Day has yet to sink in for Hereford United's Jimmy Quiggin who a little over a year ago was playing his football in the Midland Football Alliance.
An impressive strike rate for Boldmere St Michaels persuaded the Bulls then boss, Graham Turner, to sign Quiggin and thrust him into Nationwide Conference football.
Now Quiggin is set to star for United against Wrexham in the first round of FA Cup. "We've been on Sky but the idea of actually being on Match of the Day hasn't really sunk in yet but everybody's looking forward to it and hopefully we can put on a good display," he said.
The modest Quiggin admits he was shocked to learn that Hereford, Hednesford and Nuneaton Borough were interested in his services but since being given his chance by Turner the 22-year-old hasn't looked back.
The Coventry University graduate started his career in midfield but after being shunted up front struck nine goals in seven games and the following season struck 13 in 11 to attract a string of Conference clubs.
After moving to Hereford Quiggin has found himself plying his trade in midfield behind the talented Gavin Williams but he is enjoys his role on the left of midfield.
"I thought I would struggle in that position because I am not naturally left footed but you can cut in and I'm actually enjoying it out there," he said. "I would like to play up front but with Gavin Williams it is difficult although I would like to think I had the confidence to play up front."
Injuries restricted Quiggin's appearances at the start of the season and he missed the first nine games. Quiggin, who has a sports science degree, is looking for a career outside football but doesn't rule out turning professional if given the chance.
