The Jan Molby column
OUR switch to a 4-3-3 system is certainly starting to pay off - and long may it continue.
But, above all, the players are enjoying it and determined to make it a success.
When we won the Nationwide Conference we used a system that was called 4-2-3-1 on quite a number of occasions and that worked well for us.
But at the end of the day it is all about what the players are comfortable with. I certainly think playing 4-3-3 has helped us and made the players have more work to do, which is not a problem because they're very fit.
What we did early on was play 4-4-2. Ninety five per cent of all teams in Britain play that, but I think it's just about the hardest system in the world to play.
If you don't get the right men in the wide positions you lose something in centre midfield and more often than not you have the chance of being over run.
We played it okay defensively but we didn't offer enough going forward. I think with Ian Foster coming back to some of his best form that has had an influence. But I feel you've got to have the right blend when you play 4-3-3. We have that with Foster and Colin Larkin who both enjoy playing on the flanks.
Both have got a lot of pace and are capable of hurting defenders on one-on-one situations.
In midfield Danny Williams is getting better every game and I think Mark Blake has done well since day one.
Also, Dean Bennett is probably playing as well as I can remember since I've been here.
It's certainly done him no harm being on the transfer list. It's given him a real kick up the backside.
For me, he's been man-of-the-match in a few of our latest performances and he's got so much energy.
He crowned his display against Bristol Rovers on Saturday with an excellent goal which is where he has to improve.
In the position he plays we expect more goals from him but he is, certainly in terms of the last three or four weeks, the most improved player we have got at the club.
Just a few words now about our 2-0 win over Bristol Rovers which I felt provided further proof that we are moving in the right direction.
We beat a strong team who were relegated from the Second Division last season and we beat them very comfortably.
They might not have offered a lot in front of goal but defensively they are still a good experienced unit.
We have found on occasions since we've been in the Football League that teams are coming here with a good defence and that's been enough for us.
They have been able to grind out 0-0 results but hopefully we are over that now.
We are posing teams problems and even a strong defensive side like Bristol Rovers found it very difficult to deal with us.
We've got some difficult league games coming up against teams who are expected to do well.
It's Leyton Orient this Saturday, then Luton Town and Rushden so it's going to be a good test for us, but there's certainly a buzz around Aggborough at the moment.
