A CASH-strapped dad who tried to save £13 by stealing make-up for his girlfriend's Christmas present has been fined £150 by magistrates.

Dean Elvis Fowler was shopping with the girl in Worcester when they walked into Superdrug.

Fowler's partner pointed out Max Factor make-up and said she fancied it for Christmas.

"He went to look at the cosmetics and put two tubs of Max Factor inside his jacket," said Peter Parson, prosecuting.

A security guard stopped him in High Street.

At first, the 21-year-old denied he had stolen the pots. But he admitted theft when he appeared before Droitwich magistrates yesterday.

Fowler, of Thirlmere Close, Warndon, Worcester, had a string of previous convictions, the court heard, including stealing two videos from Woolworth's in February.

For that, magistrates gave him a 12-month conditional discharge.

Andrew Childs, defending, said Fowler had a drug habit, which he had now kicked.

"There's something of a pattern here of taking items from shops. In particular, there was an explosion of shoplifting in 1999 when he committed four offences in 12 months," he said.

"That marked his realisation that he had a heroin habit that had got right out of hand. Since then, he's sought expert help and has been on a methadone prescription."

Fowler had to survive on £70 benefits a fortnight. After he had paid rent and settled debts, he was left with £5.

"His partner was passing a cosmetics stand and pointed the make-up out," Mr Childs added.

"She said it was a nice idea for Christmas, so my client doubled back.

"I think we've all been in the situation when we're delighted when a partner or spouse indicates what they would like for Christmas.

"With only £5 left, one can see why he's been tempted to steal."

Fowler was fined £100 for stealing the cosmetics and £50 for the videos, with £75 court costs.
