A £50,000 bandstand to be erected in a town park is a 'complete waste of money' - according to two district councillors.
Councillor David McGrath (Lab, Beacon) and Councillor Stephen Peters (Ind Con, South Wythall) claim the money for the bandstand, to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee next year, could be better spent.
Their call for a re-think follows an executive cabinet meeting of Bromsgrove District Council last Wednesday when members decided which part of the Sanders Park, in Kidderminster Road, the traditional-style stand should be erected.
Many members of the council believe the stand will be a welcomed addition to the park and will benefit many people.
However, Cllr McGrath said he thought that the money would be better spent on upgrading an area at the Whitford end of the park, so it can be used for hockey and other outdoor games.
Speaking to the Advertiser/Messenger, he said: "I totally agree with the idea of having something to mark the jubilee, but I just can't see why it has to be a bandstand that won't really be used that much.
Cllr Peters said: "Would it not be more sensible to upgrade the Spadesbourne Suite at the council house for example, to provide opportunities for a wider range of indoor entertainment for present and future generations?"
Deputy leader of the council Cllr Terri Matthews said: "The councillors who have reported to the newspaper that they are not happy about the bandstand are entitled to their own opinions."
