ANGRY Bromsgrove families were out in force last week when they took part in a demonstration outside derelict properties near their homes which they have branded 'eyesores'.

Nearly 20 residents took part in the protest in Birmingham Road outside two semi-detached houses, which they claim have been left to rot by the National Health Service.

The protesters were backed by Bromsgrove's MP Julie Kirkbride, leader of Bromsgrove District Council, Cllr Nick Psirides (Con, Norton), and Cllr Dennis Norton (Con, Norton).

The houses, which used to be part of Barnsley Hall Hospital until its closure several years ago, have since fallen into disrepair and, following complaints, have since been boarded up and fenced off.

Richard Arnold, a resident who lives opposite the houses, said something needs to be done.

"People have been trying to get the houses demolished for more than two years. Something needs to be done, it's ridiculous.

"We would be quite content if the houses were demolished and new ones were built, maybe even office blocks, we just want to get rid of these unsightly eyesores."

Speaking to the Advertiser/Messenger Julie Kirkbride said: "These houses aren't just an eyesore for residents but also reflect very badly on people coming to visit Bromsgrove.

"The problem needs sorting out as soon as possible."

A spokesman for NHS Estates said: "Minimum maintenance is done at the site to try and make it presentable.

"There has been on-going correspondence between NHS Estates, residents and the district council."
