CALLING all talented young sportsmen and women in Wyre Forest - do you need a cash injection to help you become one of the stars of tomorrow?
The Ray Mercer Sporting Foundation is appealing to youngsters, who are aiming for the top of the sporting world, to apply for its latest round of grants.
The fund, set up by the Shuttle/Times and News in memory of the late Kidderminster Harriers secretary and district councillor Ray Mercer, has already helped more than 60 rising stars by distributing nearly £15,000 in six years. The Ray Mercer Sporting Foundation found itself receiving money instead of handing it out on Saturday.
Kidderminster Harriers has supported the fund since it 1996 and regularly donates cash from its successful lottery.
This time the fund was boosted by £100 which was presented during Saturday's home victory over Bristol Rovers. Harriers promotions manager Jennie Hale is pictured with Shuttle/Times and News editor Clive Joyce, who is also a fund trustee.
Individuals who have received financial assistance come from such diverse sports as mountain biking and show jumping, gymnastics and grasstracking.
The foundation's trustees will be meeting next month to decide who receives a share of up to £2,000 - and applications need to be submitted by Friday, December 14.
Applicants must be under 21, excel in their chosen sport, live within the Shuttle/Times & News readership area, and need money for specialised coaching, equipment or fees for national or international events.
Applications should be sent to Clive Joyce, editor, Shuttle/Times & News, Blackwell Street, Kidderminster.
Applications should include a summary of achievements, costs and ambitions, and must be submitted with a supporting letter from a coach or club official.
Grants will be presented at the Wyre Forest Sports Personality Awards on January 24 at the Glades Leisure Centre, Kidderminster.
