A PERUVIAN soup kitchen renamed after an Alvechurch church is set to benefit from donations from residents in Rowney Green.
The Rev David Martin, rector at St Laurence's Church, and five others from the village visited Peru in August and saw a number of projects started by churchgoers to the Anglican Church in Lima, one being a soup kitchen.
The soup kitchen was set up to provide one hot meal a day to the influx of up to 300 "invaders" from rural areas who come to the city seeking work and money, camping on the hillsides in appalling conditions.
Mr Martin said one member of the group, Muriel Wollaston, was now encouraging villagers in Rowney Green to raise money to provide basic utensils for the soup kitchen.
He said: "Members of the Anglican Church, led by The Right Rev William Godfrey, set up the soup kitchen to help the invaders who are living with no facilities whatsoever on the hillsides, which aren't at all green and pleasant like they are here."
Mr Martin added: "While we were there, the Peruvian ladies running the soup kitchen told us their utensils were borrowed".
"We had a collection and bought some so they could continue to make their broth at the soup kitchen.
"As a result, they renamed it the San Lorenzo Soup Kitchen, San Lorenzo being Spanish for St Laurence."
