A RECRUITMENT drive has been launched by Redditch police in an attempt to boost dwindling numbers of special constables in the town.
Numbers have fallen from 80 to eight in just a few years and police are now urging townsfolk to consider giving up a minimum of four hours a week to walk the beat.
Specials have the same power as regular police officers and now wear the same uniform and have to undergo three months training.
Sub divisional officer of Redditch Special Constabulary John Maynard said: "Many people see becoming a special as a stepping stone to joining the regular force and a lot of people join for that reason."
Redditch Library is playing host to two recruitment days on Friday, November 23 from 4pm to 7pm and Saturday, November 24 from 10am to 4pm.
Mr Maynard said: "I will be there providing any information people want about becoming a special and there will also be recruitment packs available."
Anyone wanting to become a special must to be community minded, physically fit, aged over 18 and educated.
Mr Maynard added: "Specials will have to go through three months training before they are even let out on the streets. They have also have to pass the regular recruitment tests.
"Once they have completed the three months they will be given regular training."
