IN this Lamberts & Wade Malvern Table Tennis League Division One match, Ledbury Lions entertained Manor Park Pumas and recorded a fine 9-1 win.
The first game proved to be one of the games of the night with Richard Smith coming back from 10-6 down in the deciding set to eventually win 14-12 against Jon Dyke. Lions then raced into a 7-0 lead, but the eighth game saw the only unbeaten player left in Division One, Gordon Stables, destroyed in three straight sets by Dave Hallam. Pumas though were unable to win either of the last two games of the night, with Lions winning 9-1 to take all four points. Lions other unbeaten player on the night was Neville Meredith.
Grosvenor Eagles played hosts to CSSC Ramblers in what on paper looked like being a very close match. This proved to be so with there never being more than one game in it all night, so a 5-5 draw was a fair result for both teams. On the night however, nobody remained unbeaten with Dave White losing to Jim Ahern in three straight sets, Jim losing to Norman Merchant and Norman losing to Chris Hewitt. For Eagles, Dave and Norman won two games each with Ian Bell winning their other game. For Ramblers, Chris and Jim won two games each and then teamed up together to win the doubles and remain unbeaten in doubles this season. Ramblers other player was Vic Frampton.
Manor Park Cavaliers entertained Manor Park Express in this top of the table local derby. Express raced into a 3-1 lead but then lost the next five games in a row, and with it the match, although Dave Woodyatt did manage to make the score line a more respectable 6-4 with his last game of the night victory over Gavin Oseman. For Cavaliers, Mike Keeley was unbeaten, with Gavin Oseman and Trevor Simmons winning one game each, and Mike and Trevor the doubles. For Express, Dave Woodyatt and Alan Salisbury won two games each.
YMCA Vulcans played hosts to YMCA Magpies and took an early lead when Nick Price defeated Chris Jones in the first game of the night. This was however their only success, with Magpies taking the remaining games and with it all four points. Both Mark Jones and Steve Humphrys were unbeaten for Magpies.
CSSC Trojans entertained Ledbury Merlins with Trojans having to call up John O'Loghlen to fill in for the absent Dave Hayes, but he failed to disappoint with a superb four set victory over Nigel Foreshew. With Graham Thompson getting back to his best form and remaining unbeaten and with Jon Gaskell chipping in with a three set victory over Mike Morgan, Trojans came away from the match with a very creditable 5-5 draw.
For Merlins, Mike Wheatley won two games, with Nigel Foreshew and Mike Morgan one game each, plus the doubles.
RESULTS: Ledbury Lions 9, Manor Park Pumas 1; Grosvenor Eagles 5, CSSC Ramblers 5; Manor Park Cavaliers 6, Manor Park Express 4; YMCA Vulcans 1, YMCA Magpies 9; CSSC Trojans 5, Ledbury Merlins 5.
UPTON played twice this week in Division Two with mixed fortune. They proved too strong for Nomads although the 9-1 score line flattered them a little with no less than six games going to a deciding set. Pete Nash and Roger Davies each won three and the doubles, Matt Jones won two, Dave Huntley was the only winner for Nomads.
Roger was again in fine form against Wombats, winning all three once more. Brian Gregory beat Peter Harding in a tight five set thriller to register Upton's other win. For Wombats, Steve Glazzard and Paul Lythgoe each won two plus the doubles and Peter Harding took one.
Several of the games in the match between Ledbury Exhaust and CSSC Nomads could have gone either way but Exhaust came away with a 7-3 victory. John Meredith won all his three for Exhaust and was ably backed by Stewart Moss and Neil Gladwin who each won two. Dave Backhurst and Ray Mollatt each won one for the home team Ray partnered Dave Huntley to success in the doubles.
Broadheath proved too strong for Poolbrook Rangers. Dave Elliott and Roger Bates won three apiece and Pete Roberts two (and the doubles with Dave). Dave Steen saved the whitewash for the visitors although he was unlucky to pick up a second win, when he lost 12-10 in the fifth set to Roger.
RESULTS: Upton 9, CSSC Nomads 1; Manor Park Wombats 6, Upton 4; Broadheath Belters 9, Poolbrook Rangers 1; CSSC Nomads 3, Ledbury Exhaust 7.
COLIN and Alan Sage each won a singles set to earn a point from their match with Police in the Malvern Table Tennis League Division Three when only three sets were won in three straight games and five went to four. Colin Gale had three full length sets and won them all and the doubles with Alan Holmes. Ralph Cook won his first two sets in the league.
In spite of four sets going to a fifth game Rovers were only able to clinch one of them when Rob Redden won the ninth set of the evening. David Smith and Gavin Oseman were unbeaten for Juniors A.
Juniors B were all in good form when Matt Lang won three, Anthony Wiseman two and Tom James one against Crackpots C. Richard Cullis won two and Ed Palmer one for the visitor.
Crackpots B had a long evening of 42 games with Abbeydowne and eventually won easily after Bill Lucas had taken the first set in straight games.
