ROWING: More than 130 crews attended Stourport Boat Club's first home event under new captain Ian Hough on Sunday.

Well-supported local clubs Bewdley and Evesham were particularly successful at the Small Boats Head of the River Race.

The crews competed in 40 different events from junior 14 to veteran E, the competition for the oldest rowers.

And perfect weather conditions meant an excellent day's sport as Evesham were the overall winners after taking 10 of the races.

Stourport were second with seven wins, followed by Bewdley on five and Worcester on four.

Other successes were from Burton Leander and Shiplake College (three each), Gloucester, Upton and Ironbridge (two each) as well as Lancaster John O'Gaunts and Bridgnorth.

Evesham recorded the best time of the day over the 4,500-metre course in men's senior two-coxed four with 12 minutes 14 seconds.

Stourport men's elite double sculls managed an impressive 12-24.

New club president Bob Eaton was on hand to present the medals.

Stourport management committee chairman Tony Gavin said: "We would like to thank all members and friends, without whose help the running of such an event would be impossible.

"These events are the lifeblood of the club and the help so unselfishly given by so many unsung volunteers ensure its future."
