LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY: The speaker at the most recent meeting of the Local History Society was Dr Mike Hodder the archaeologist for the City of Birmingham. Dr Hodder was able to describe the earliest beginnings of England's second city and to describe some of the investigative digs which have taken place during the extensive redevelopment which has taken place during the latter years of the 20th century and which is still taking place. Dr Hodder mentioned that ancient remains had been located in what is still the centre of the city around the Bull Ring and market area and that, under the auspices of the City Council archaeological digs are always allowed to take place before any new development. The next meeting of the Local History Society on November 14 will feature a return visit by the well-known local speaker Phillip Coventry of Redditch Pictorial History Society with more slides of Old Redditch. All those who have heard Phillip speak on previous occasions will know that we are in for a feast of local history well-laced with his usual good humour and comic aside's. Meetings take place at the Greig Hall at 8pm.
