A VEGETABLE-packing company in Birlingham near Pershore is clashing with villagers in an attempt to prove that its operation is legitimate.
The bosses of Red Star Growers Ltd are applying to Wychavon District Council for a certificate of lawful use of the land at Lower End.
It is being used as a vegetable processing business, which includes bringing vegetables on to the site from other producers and washing, cleaning grading, chilling and packing them for distribution.
Villagers first complained to Wychavon District Council last year that Red Star's operation had changed and now needed planning permission.
The company said the business had remained the same for 10 years so it should be lawfully allowed to continue.
Managing director Christopher Simms said: "We have progressed but, in essence, our trading activities have not changed.
"We have employed a consultant to gain the necessary permission which we require."
Parish chairman, John Warby said: "This is a contentious issue. Many villagers say the company has grown from being a local grower packing local produce to a much bigger concern, dealing with supermarkets all over the country.
"Once there were only tractors and trailers driving in and out, now huge 44-tonne lorries are streaming in and out.
"It is fair to say, however, that not all villagers are opposing the application."
An application for a Lawful Use certificate should be brought before Wychavon planning committee within the next six weeks
