OVER 200 people attended the annual Service of Remembrance last Sunday morning at St Peter's Church, Powick. Before the service members of the 7th Worcester Scouts, Cubs and Beavers and 1st Powick Brownies formed a guard of honour for members of the Royal British Legion to march past. The standard of Powick & Callow End Branch of the Royal British Legion was carried by John Mason, escorted by Brian Charles and Ray Henley. For the 7th Worcester Scouts, the standard was carried by Ian Griffiths, escorted by Martin Chambers and Alex Poole. For the 7th Worcester Cubs, the standard was carried by Alex Bentley escorted by Thomas Bennett and Dominic Thompson. The Beavers' standard was paraded for the first time on Remembrance Day and was carried by Jonathan Howell escorted by Mark Smout and Sam Jones. For the 1st Pow-ick Brownies the flag was carried by Louise Lyons escorted by Stephanie Hencher and Lauren Mullen. The standards were received by Rev David Nichol who led the service. Poppy wreaths were laid by Molly Gwilliam on behalf of the women of the Royal British Legion and by Neville Fairburn, chairman of the local branch of the RBL. Members of the uniformed organisation each laid a wooden cross at the War Memorial in church. The trumpeter sounded Last Post and Reveille, and the Homage was spoken by Bill Haywood. After two minute silence the Khomia Prayer was read by David Brickell. The trumpeter sounded the Last Post and Reveille. The service continued with Bible readings by Bill Haywood and David Brickell. The choir sang the anthem Go in Peace accompanied by organist Lindall Brown. Prayers including prayers for peace, were led by Meg Allsopp (Brownie Guider) and the Poppy Appeal collection was taken by members of the RBL and Scouts. The service concluded with the National Anthem. It was pleasing to see so many of the young members of the uniformed organisations present and to welcome some guides from 1st Crown East Company and St Marks (Worcester). After the service three members of 7th Worcester Scouts were invested, including Thomas Nichol.
Over 100 people danced the night away to continuous music provided by a local DJ in Powick Parish Hall last Saturday evening. Approxi-mately £500 was raised, which included £70 from sale of raffle tickets, and sales of baked potatoes and baked beans (provided by John and Ros Mason). Sounds of the 60's and 70's proved popular as this was one of the most successful village dances held for many years. Proc-eeds were in aid of Powick Playing Field Association whose committee helped to run the bar and the event.
The annual coffee morning to raise funds for the Child-ren's Society is being held at 78 Malvern Road, Powick on Thursday, November 22 from 10am to noon. There will be a bring & buy stall, cake stall, Christmas cards and gifts, plus raffle. Contact Marian Lewis if you have any items for sale on 01905 830247. The Children's Society works to help disadvantaged children in this country.
The MHHYAT calendar is now on sale price £5. This year's calendar is compiled of prints provided by Malvern artists. Proceeds are in aid of the young homeless. The calendar is available from Meg Allsopp on 01905 830746.
Mrs Meg Allsopp will be "sleeping out" on the night of Friday, December 7 and will be seeking sponsors. The event takes place from 10pm to 6am in the Priory grounds, Malvern and is in aid of MHHYAT Foyer (the Malvern Hills Homeless Young Adults Trust) which supports 16-25 years old who would otherwise be homeless.
