A LARGE response has been received to a survey asking for opinions about proposed car parking changes in Malvern.

The survey was done by Save Malvern Car Parks Action Group, which is opposing plans for 38 flats on the site of the former Malvern Hills District Council Treasurers Site.

The development will claim an unofficial car park on the Albert Road North site, used by council workers.

SMCPAG says workers will still need somewhere to park when the site goes and fears more on-street parking around Victoria Road, already filled with cars on a daily basis.

The group distributed a questionnaire to houses around Victoria Road. More than three-quarters were returned within four days.

Of 142 respondents to the survey, 133 said they did not want to see the new development go ahead, with 134 saying they thought it would be detrimental to Malvern's Conservation Area.

Seventy-one per cent also said they thought the car park on Albert Road North, currently used by council employees, should be open to all workers in Malvern and all said they should have a say in what happens to community-owned assets.

Nigel Lomas, a partner at BLB Architects, defended his firm's development, which will be considered by MHDC's southern area planning committee on Monday.

"It will create low-cost social housing within easy access of the town for people such as doctors and teachers," he said. "It is very much in line with the Gover-nment's thinking on housing.

"We are constructing a car park for council workers of 14-16 spaces, and whilst there will be some car parking displaced, we feel this scheme is wholly appropriate for that site."
