A SCHEME to ban troublemakers from pubs and bars in Malvern and Upton-upon-Severn has got off to a great start, say organisers.
Dozens of landlords from the area visited Malvern police station on Monday to sign forms to take part in the PubWatch programme.
PC Dilip Sarkar, founder of the scheme, said: "The turn-out was tremendous, and those licensees who did not attend sent apologies and made alternative arrangements to sign the necessary paperwork. We have therefore covered Upton and Malvern completely."
People convicted of offences such as public disorder, violence or criminal damage will be subject to an "exclusion order" by the court. This order will mean they are banned from all member premises.
Pictures of offenders will be circulated to participating bars and pubs so they can be recognised.
PC Sarkar said: "We commend our local licensees for their solidarity and cooperation which, there is no doubt, will help Malvern become an even safer place.
"The timing, given the forthcoming festive season, is perfect, and anyone thinking of behaving inappropriately in our pubs had better think again - they might find themselves travelling a long way for a drink!"
Anthony Wilkinson, co-owner of Olivers bar, Belle Vue Terrace, said: "This will benefit everyone, the customers, the licensees and the police. It is a good way of getting the troublemakers out of our town."
