I JUST wonder at the self-promotion of Councillor Derek Prodger in the pages of your newspaper as some sort of saviour of Worcester, fighting the dragon of supermarket development.
It appears from your report that, almost single-handed, he has "saved" us from Asda on the Cattle Market site, "saved" us from Sainsbury's in St John's and, no doubt, will claim the same when Tesco's site at Christopher Whitehead's come to him for a decision.
The truth, which Coun Prodger fails to tell us, is that none of those sites can be built on by supermarkets unless the city or county councils (or both) agree to sell their land.
All councillors can join in the decision to sell the land, or not, if planning permission is given, unless that opportunity to decide in council is taken in the secrecy of the council leader's meeting with the Tory Group.
Using the planning process to avoid taking decisions over land sales is a ruse to try to convince us all that Coun Prodger is some sort of Tory hero. It won't wash.
COUN ROB PEACHEY,
York Place,
Worcester.
