A FIRE broke out among piles of old cars, metal and rubbish at a Worcester scrap merchants at the weekend.

Two appliances and a turntable ladder were sent to the scene at W Prosser scrap merchants on Hylton Road, behind the old fruit market, at 1.20am on Saturday, November 17.

A crew from Worcester Fire Station said the fire involved a large quantity of rubbish and eight scrap vehicles.

Firefighters managed to control the blaze by 2.55am.

Thermal imaging cameras were used as part of procedure to make sure there were no bodies in the cars.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, but Bill Bowkett, a partner in the business, said he had no doubt it was started by "young vandals".

"The Sunday before last somebody broke in and ran one of the wrecked cars into the gate and smashed it down," Mr Bowkett said.
