PARENTS and young children in Worcester are set to benefit from a multi-million pound investment in the city.

The Government is handing Worcester £5m over five years to fund a Sure Start programme.

The initiative aims to work with parents-to-be, mums, dads and children to help the social development of youngsters, especially those who are disadvantaged.

Parents of children under four can become involved to decide how to spend the cash to help improve their youngster's physical, intellectual and social development.

Improving social and emotional development, health, learning ability and families and communities are the scheme's four main aims.

The main areas covered by Sure Start are Dines Green, including all housing to the west of Laugherne Brook together with Meadowbank Drive, Tolladine, and the Brickfields neighbourhood including Saddlers Walk and houses west of Windermere Drive.

"We're in the process of devising the Sure Start plan," said Ian Craigan, assistant community development manager for Worcester City Council.

"We're consulting with parents on how best to spend the money."

Post-natal support, parenting support and information, guidance on breastfeeding and hygiene are some of the facilities Sure Start could provide.

Parents are being actively encouraged to take part in the programme by making up one-third of the scheme's management board.

"We want every parent, carer and parent-to-be in the Sure Start area to take up the opportunity to take part and have their say," said Mr Craigan.

"Their comments will provide valuable information to ensure Worcester benefits from the scheme."

The programme will be able to budget for up to £750,000 each year, for five years, and, in addition, up to £750,000 capital will be used over the first three years.
