SUNDAY, November 11, is an excellent day to reply to D E Margrett (You Say, November 6) who tries to oversimplify the abundance of national standards flying in Canada.

It has nothing to do with Wolfe's defeat of Montcalm. It is only a minority that wishes to secede from Canada, as the referendum of three years ago proved.

As one who spends roughly six months every year in Canada, through connections in church ministry to university, a little knowledge has been obtained of Canada's political, economic, intellectual and social life.

Being a federal state, comprising 10 provinces, three territories, each with their own government and numerous Indian groups who live on Crown Reservations under Treaty from Queen Victoria, with their Council of Chiefs, there are bound to be a few problems. However, all but a few Quebec people are bound by one bond.

It is patriotism. In Britain, this means being British first, Mr Margrett. And this is what Worcester City Council and its citizens badly need.

Then we might see our national flag flying above the Guildhall and elsewhere.

THE REV D G GRIFFIN,

Newland, Malvern.
