THE Government is trying to rush through legislation which would give them frighteningly widespread powers to slaughter animals during disease outbreaks.
Under the Animal Health (Amendment) Bill, the Government will be able to kill animals even if they have never been exposed to a disease and even if they have been vaccinated against it.
Family pets and sanctuary animals will be under threat - if these laws are passed, inspectors will be able to go on to an individual's land and kill healthy pets against the owner's will.
These animals have often been rescued from the most appalling cruelty and they deserve the chance to live out their lives in peace.
Alarmingly, pet and sanctuary owners will no longer have the right to take their case to court. If they refuse to allow DEFRA inspectors on to their land, the inspector will simply need to obtain a warrant.
Anyone who resists entry will face imprisonment and/or a hefty fine.
If you feel strongly that pet and sanctuary animals should be exempt from death under the Animal Health Act, please write to your MP.
