OVER the last year, several Alcestrians have been offered a once-in-a-lifetime chance to work on projects all over the world, writes Helen Clarke.
Several months ago, Susan Richardson returned from Chile, where she was supporting the environmental charity Earthwatch.
Her aim was to help scientists re-introduce otters into the habitat and, on her return, work with Alcester residents to create a community project.
Mrs Richardson became concerned about the loss of wildlife in Alcester when she used to take her dog for walks along the riverbanks in the area, particularly with regard to water voles and kingfishers.
She had heard about Earthwatch and its Millennium Awards programme and decided to apply to go on a River Otters of Chile programme.
The idea is people gain experience and knowledge on the international projects, which they can then apply to schemes they undertake within their own communities on their return.
And Mrs Richardson's experience is already being put to great use in Alcester.
A survey is already well under way and Mrs Richardson, along with her husband, Foster, who is due to take part in the same project in Chile, has divided the river into different sections for study.
