DEAR EDITOR - Both Wychavon District and Droitwich Town councils were elected to serve the people, but despite many vociferous protestations from the townspeople of Droitwich Spa, the council members continue with their hare-brained schemes.
A supermarket and filling station on Kidderminster Road would have served the people living on that side of town, who at present have no shopping facilities close at hand.
If housing is built on that site it will condemn people to live in a most unpleasant area. Is there a single councillor who would wish to reside there? I think not!
As for a supermarket on the present market hall site together with a car park -- just who thought up that one? Especially as it is intended to encroach on Gurneys Lane, which is probably the most interesting and historic corner of the town.
The proposal for the lido is yet another madness. The money earmarked for the merger with a private company and legal fees involved would more than bring the present pool up to date and provide a roof for winter.
If the plan goes ahead, the facility would prove too expensive for most people to take advantage. A trendy multi pool is not wanted. All that is required is a pool that can, once more, be enjoyed as it has been for the last 70 years by people from all over the country.
My plea to the council is - please do not try to turn Droitwich Spa into something which it is not. Let it remain a small market town with a pace which would truly appeal to visitors.
H & J Meereis,
Riverside Way,
Droitwich Spa.
