DEAR EDITOR - The consultation meeting at the Community Hall in Droitwich, held between Wychavon Council, the proposed developers Calypso Ltd, and the general public regarding the redevelopment of the lido site, produced a massive attendance, with standing room only.
Of these I estimate approximately 95 per cent to be vehemently opposed to the re-development.
Wychavon District Council stated that the lido was closed due to health and safety regulations, but omitted to say what these were. They also stated that, in the proposed plans, there would be only a small outdoor pool, in place of the present lido.
In summer, hundreds of children enjoyed themselves in the lido, and should the proposed plans go ahead, the new pool will be too small for them to do this. The council officials did not seem to be to sure of the value of a 99 year lease of valuable park land, and Calypso, when asked, abstained from answering this question.
I, like many other people in the audience, formed the impression that Wychavon were going to railroad this scheme though, irrespective of which Droitwich people wanted.
The name lido means "open air pool" and this is what should remain.
If Wychavon go ahead with this proposal, they are already talking about phase two. How much more of the lido park land do they intend to take? They estimate about three thousand people will visit this new venture per week, where are they going to park, when there are only about 70 car parking places in the car park?
The next Droitwich Town Council meeting will take place on Monday December 4. Droitwich people, please attend and make sure the council listen to your views!
