I AM writing to express my concern about a statement reported in the article entitled "Residents prefer fags to fitness" (Shuttle/Times and News, November 15), made by Councillor Siri Hayward, implying that residents from the Foley Park area of Kidderminster "would rather smoke fags down the pub than use a fitness centre".

I am a specialist community health nurse based in that area and have worked with the community for over 10 years.

Many residents do smoke and are aware of the health risks of smoking, and have sought help to quit smoking.

Over the past year members of the Wyre Forest Primary Care Trust have run a successful Men's Health Day in the Musketeer public house, and a smoking cessation adviser is running a series of smoking cessation sessions at that pub every Wednesday, as a direct response to the interest shown by local people.

Local general practices and myself have also successfully supported residents in their efforts to give up smoking.

Such resolve should be applauded when families may be struggling with a variety of difficulties yet still recognise the value of stopping smoking.

The provision of non-judgmental support to all communities is the appropriate response and the one that gets results.
