A THIRTEEN-year-old boy from Evesham died from head injuries this week following a road accident.

Adam Smout, of Northwick Road, was rushed to the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch by Evesham's paramedics who did all they could to save him, after he was involved in a collision with a silver Vauxhall Corsa.

He was pronounced dead on arrival, however, on Tuesday.

The accident happened at Elm Road, near the junction of Lime Street at about 5.50pm. Adam was believed to be crossing the road with a fellow Evesham High School pupil. The 14-year-old girl was taken to the Alexandra Hospital in a separate ambulance and treated for less serious injuries.

The driver of the Corsa, who comes from Worcester, was travelling out of Evesham at the time of the collision and was uninjured.

Adam's school friends, who have left floral tributes by the accident scene, are struggling to come to terms with his death.

Evesham High's head teacher, David Kelly, said: "The whole school, students and staff, are shocked and very upset at this tragic news. Adam Smout was a year 9 student who was a smart, polite, popular well-liked young lad.

"He had made a great start at the school after joining us from Simon de Montfort Middle School. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the parents and also the parents our other student who was injured in the accident." He said school psychologists had visited Evesham High to offer counselling to Adam's friends

Pagin Bassey of The Corner Shop on Lime Street said: "People coming into the shop have been saying how sad they are. There is a problem with visibility at the end of Lime Street because of the car parking near the end of the road."

Pensioner, 76-year-old Max Wykes-Joyce, from Elm Road, said: "It is a very busy road - night and day - and some people drive very fast. I never attempt to cross it in the dark."

Investigating officer, PC Adrian Maiden, is calling for witnesses to come forward. He said: "We have spoken to witnesses at the scene but are keen to talk to anyone else who may have seen what happened to come forward.

"Anyone with information can either contact the police on 01905 723888, quoting c/535420 or Crimestoppers on freephone 0800 555 111."

An inquest into Adam's death was opened and adjourned to a date to be fixed yesterday. His post mortem was to be carried out today.
