PLANS to make Arrow Valley Countryside Centre completely self sufficient have been put in place with a bid for solar panels to be installed, writes Becky Procter.

The centre's popularity has rocketed and visitor numbers have gone from 70,000 in its first year to more than 100,000 already this year.

And by April, the annual figure is expected to reach 150,000 as new projects and ideas for the centre, based at Arrow Valley Lake, are launched.

The project is expected to cost about £120,000 and the DTI would fund up to 80 per cent.

Other schemes being investigated include rainwater harvesting which will see water collected and recycled to use for eco-flush toilets.

The centre is also looking to offer courses in craft skill such as basket making and evening classes concentrating on wildlife studies.

And a nature trail is currently being created.
