EVESHAM Rowing Club's Andrew Walker attended the trials for the Junior National Squad in Boston, Lincolnshire on Saturday.

More than 300 young hopefuls competed in a 5,000m time trial, all hoping to impress chief coach Pete Sheppard and take an important step towards representing Great Britain in next summer's junior international competitions.

The Prince Henry's High School put in a powerful and impressive performance, beating national J16 champion Dan Tipney of Marlow, and coming second only to his doubles partner Zac Purchase of Kings School Worcester.

Matching their times against the Junior 18 category placed both Walker and Purchase in the top ten times overall, which makes a strong case for international selection next year.

Walker, who has been a member of the club for six years, attributes much of his success to the tremendous commitment of coaches Keith Rafter, Neil Staite and Norman Baldwin.

He is currently coached by Prince Henry's teacher Mark Earnshaw and coaches at Henley's Leander Club.
